The BarthHaas group has come together to publish our first global sustainability report. It highlights initiatives the sustainability teams at BarthHaas, Haas and HPA have accomplished in the past few years, and what we have planned for the future.

The group’s regional sustainability teams have increased communication and collaboration, sharing ideas, knowledge and resources that will inspire new initiatives and push innovation on a global scale. They plan to continue working together moving forward and see collaboration as a strength in establishing aligned sustainability strategies, while also holding each other accountable for accomplishing the goals they have set.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges faced by hop growers. The BarthHaas group is focusing efforts on reducing our environmental footprint so that future generations can continue to farm successfully. The group has been working side by side with our farms to develop hop varieties that ensure a supply security for our brewing customers. As a signatory to the UN Global Compact we pledge to operate responsibly in the global fight against climate change, inequality and poverty.

For the first time in the group’s history, we have produced a sustainability report for every continent on which we operate. The highlights of these individual reports have been combined in the global sustainability report, which includes a detailed inventory of all emissions.

In 2021, both global hop acreage and global hop production increased. This is the eighth consecutive year of acreage growth, which is led by the US and Germany who account for 73 percent of global hop acreage. While Australia is responsible for a relatively small portion of global hop production, HPA’s Victorian farm expansion is adding to this statistic. This year marked a significant milestone, with the completion of an AUD$35million capital expansion project that involved planting 300 new hectares of in-demand Aussie hops like Eclipse^®, Galaxy^® and Vic Secret.

The global pivot towards flavour and aroma varieties has resulted in record high alpha acid levels for the third year in a row. Accordingly, our Aussie hops impact in beer is expected to remain strong, with oil content equal or above the 5-year average for all varieties. Read our full crop report here.

Above-average production volumes have led to oversupply of the market. This has become apparent through the decrease in longer-term hop contracts, and the increase in restructuring hop contracts and delaying call-offs. This surplus, coupled with an unprecedented increase in production costs, is a dangerous combination that will have to be addressed through immediate acreage adjustments.

It is likely the beer industry will shift towards equilibrium once the hospitality industry eases back into normal operating hours around the world, but the lasting effects of coronavirus are still creating production delays, supply shortages and cost increases. These challenges have only been intensified by the conflict in Ukraine, imposed by Russia.

Global beer consumption did not collapse as much as initially predicted, with many countries experiencing a significant recovery in 2021. Consequently, global beer production increased by 4 percent, but is yet to return to pre-pandemic levels.

While some hops are in surplus, Aussie hops continue to enjoy strong demand from brewers everywhere. This means crop 2023 is heavily contracted, and brewers are encouraged to communicate their Aussie hop requirements to our sales team and enter into rolling hop contracts for supply security.

BarthHaas, the world’s largest supplier of hop products and services, publish an annual report that provides timely statistics on the global hop industry. With each we gain an insight into the latest agronomic and economic trends. As the Australian representative of the group, we are proud to share the BarthHaas 2019/2020 Hop Report with our brewing customers.

The past year has seen its fair share of historic events. It has been rough, but it is not all bad news. World beer production continued to climb. More than half the world beer volume is brewed by China, US, Brazil, Mexico and Germany. Australia is currently ranked 28 with a beer volume output of 16,100,000 hectolitres.

Hop production also continued to climb. The main contributors to this result were the US and Germany, with smaller contributions from Poland, New Zealand and Australia. However, more than three quarters of the world hop production is currently grown in the US and Germany. Overall, there was a slight fall in the production of aroma hops to 59% of global yield, and a slight increase in the production of alpha hops to 41% of global yield. Australia’s hop production grew to 1,648 metric tonnes in 2020, which was almost entirely aroma hops.

The global 2020 crop is expected to meet reduced demand, which could be noticeable for years to come depending on the duration of the global pandemic. It is possible that beer production might decrease by 8 to 14% year on year as a result of COVID-19. Craft breweries are suffering disproportionately because of the large number who depend on selling beer on site. The hop industry will need to work side-by-side with the brewing industry to restore the balance of hop supply and demand in future years.

In 2022, global hop acreage declined for the first time in eight years, with global hop production decreasing 19%. Aroma hops share of global hop production decreased, but their share of alpha acid increased. The exact opposite was the case for bittering hops.

Hop acreage in Australia increased for the ninth year in a row through new plantings in Victoria beginning to reach commercial maturity, with Galaxy share of acreage reaching 60%, followed by Vic Secret with 18% and Eclipse with 9%. In Germany, Herkules increased it’s share of acreage to 35%, followed by Perle with 16% and Hallertau Tradition with 14%. And in the US, Citra increased it’s share of acreage to 20%, followed by Mosaic with 11% and Cascade with 9%.

All regions experienced cool and wet conditions that delayed the development of hop plants early in the growing season. This resulted in localised flooding in Australia, as well as thunderstorms, hailstorms and severe winds in Germany towards the end of spring that caused some damage, particularly to new plantings. Above average temperatures and below average rainfall in summer aided cone maturation in Australia, but caused the plants to show drought stress symptoms including underdeveloped alpha acids in Germany. The US also recorded underdeveloped cone size for several varieties.

Despite the below-average harvest in 2022 the market is still in surplus with call-offs of contracted products being significantly delayed. This indicates the social and economic effects of the Coronavirus pandemic and geopolitical conflict are still presenting the hop and brewing industries with corresponding challenges. It was expected that global beer production might further decline in 2022. Instead, it increased by 1.3 %.

With the costs of energy, raw materials and labor soaring, brewers’ profit margins are shrinking. In order to counter this, appropriate action is being taken, including the introduction of cost-saving measures. No exceptions are being made when it comes to hops, with clear trends toward higher alpha varieties at the expense of aroma varieties, and growing demand for more efficient hop products.

In 2023, global hop production increased despite a decrease in global hop acreage for the second year in succession. The decline in acreage was more significant than the previous year, particularly in the US. HPA idled 21% of acreage, resulting in a 26% decrease in production volume.

Despite the substantially below-average harvest in 2022 followed by an average harvest in 2023, inventory levels from previous years are such that the brewing industry is still well stocked and even oversupplied on some varieties. This is becoming increasingly apparent through the decrease in longer-term hop contracts, and the increase in restructuring hop contracts and delaying call-offs.

The US market remains substantially oversupplied with aroma hops despite the significant acreage reductions of the previous year. In 2024, hop producers reduced acreage by 18% in an attempt to balance supply and demand. On the contrary, Germany’s hop producers are replacing aroma hops that are surplus to demand with reliably yielding and more climate resistant bittering hops. With forward contracts covering much of the crop up to 2025, there is little likelihood of a significant reduction in acreage.

This surplus is coupled with energy, raw materials, packaging, logistics and labour costs remaining at a high level, putting pressure on the brewers’ profit margins. Global beer production decreased 1%, with significant declines in the US and Vietnam buoyed by significant increases in India, Cambodia and Australasia.

Availability of Aussie hops is currently better than ever. As global supply and demand returns to balance, we encourage our brewing customers to consider their hop requirements, and communicate them early and often.

In 2024, global hop production and hop acreage have further decreased to match consumer demand. The decline in acreage was more significant than the previous year, particularly in the US with a 17% reduction in total acreage. HPA idled 15% of acreage, but had a 9% increase in production volume due to a bumper crop.

The US market remains oversupplied with aroma hops despite further acreage reductions of the previous year. In 2024, hop producers reduced acreage by 18% in an attempt to balance supply and demand. As of 2024, Germany is now the world’s biggest hop producer, even with a 340-hectare acreage reduction.

This surplus is coupled with energy, raw materials, packaging, logistics and labour costs remaining at a high level, putting pressure on brewers’ profit margins. Global beer production decreased a further 0.3%, with significant declines in Asia (-2.3%), Australia (-1.6%) and the US (-1.3%), buoyed by significant increases in Africa (6.7%) and Europe (1.1%).

It is more important than ever for suppliers to work in partnership with their brewing customers. Communicating early and often is the best way to ensure we have your needs covered, whether that be availability of proprietary hops for core range beers, commercialising experimental hops for flavour diversity, or innovative hop products for more sustainable beverages.

The latest instalment of the Hop Science newsletter has arrived from Dr. Christina Schoenberger of the Barth-Haas Group. With each, we gain an insight into the latest science, innovations and discoveries from research conducted worldwide. See the April 2019 report summary below.

What’s the most effective way of hunting thiols? After applying three different methods of detection, and collating a database of more than 100 newly synthesized sulphur compounds and a total of 300 compounds, these German Researchers learned the most sensitive detector was…their noses.

We’ve always known hops and yeast are good partners, but a group of Dutch Researchers have taken the relationship even further. Looking for a way to increase the production of prenylated flavonoids in different plants (such as hops), without the usual expensive extraction and enrichment processes, the group successfully used yeast to increase the components production.

Are hops affected by terroir? In trying to help brewers find a more consistent aroma and flavour profile in their hops, Belgian researchers illustrate how SNP markers can be used to trace varietal origin, but supplementary biochemical characterisation is still crucial when seeking aromatic consistency.

The BarthHaas Report 2016/2017

Each year the BarthHaas Group, of which HPA is a proud member, publish the Barth Report. This year is the celebration of the 140th edition of the report, a long-lasting constant in an industry that has gone through a process of change again and again.

The Barth Report provides timely statistics on global and regional hop agronomics, usage and trends in the hops and brewing markets.

The 2017 crop results are explored in the snapshot of Australia, and for the third year in succession, the Australian total hop acreage has increased – rising by 16% from 2016-2017. This has been made possible by HPA’s continued investment in productivity as we try to keep pace with our customers needs.

The BarthHaas Report has been published annually with few exceptions since 1877. Owen sat down with Matt and Pete to discuss the details.

The world has changed significantly since then, but the timely and objective reporting on events in the hop market following each crop year, remains constant.

Following the release of this year’s report, Owen Johnston spoke to Matt Kirkegaard and Pete Mitcham from Brews News, discussing international hop trends and what to expect in the not-so-distant future.
