Casual Seasonal Work
HPA offers a range of seasonal work on our farms. Bushy Park Estates is located in Southern Tasmania, a 50-minute drive from Hobart. Rostrevor Hop Gardens and Buffalo River Valley are located in North eastern Victoria, a 10-minute drive from Myrtleford. Limited on-site accommodation options are available, including housing or camping.
We recruit casual seasonal workers for:
- Hop harvest which runs for 5-6 weeks from late-February to the end of March, with recruitment occurring from early January.
- Hop stringing and hop training which runs for 5-6 weeks from June to November, with recruitment occurring from early May.
Hop harvest
- From late-February to the end of March in TAS and VIC
You’ll be required to work 9-11 hour shifts depending on your role. This is around 38-50 hours per week for 5-6 weeks. Day and night shifts are available.
There are a range of hop harvest roles, including:
- Operating manual and automatic machinery to ensure hop bines are ready to be loaded into trailers.
- Transporting hop bines from the field to the picking shed using a tractor and trailer.
- Loading hops onto an overhead conveyor belt in the picking shed.
- Sweeping and keeping production facilities tidy.
- Production line duties in our pellet plant facility.
- Laboratory and quality control
Hop stringing
- From July to October in TAS
- From August to November in VIC
Hop stringing is the process of tying coir strings to overhead trellis wires and securing the other end of the string into the ground near the base of the hop plant. The strings provides support for the hop plant as it grows.
Hop training
- From October to early-November in TAS
- From November to December in VIC
Hop training requires you to walk through the hop gardens tying (or wrapping) the hop bines around the coir strings. This gives the hop bines the kick start they need to ensure they can climb the string and reach their full growth potential.
What it’s like to work with us?
You will be paid a competitive casual hourly rate under the Horticultural Award. Payment for hop stringing and hop training is by piecework agreement. Hourly rates are paid for induction and training. On-the-job role-specific training is provided to ensure everyone is fully supported in their role.
